Gemstone Identification

Our Gemstone Identification service provides accurate, scientific verification of a gem’s identity — helping clients distinguish between natural, treated, synthetic, and imitation stones with complete confidence.

Whether you are a jeweller, collector, dealer, or investor, our detailed analysis and professional documentation ensure that every stone you work with is exactly what it claims to be.

Our Identification Process

1. Intake & Logging
Each gemstone is carefully received, labeled, and securely logged into our system. Every sample is assigned a unique identification number for traceability and secure handling.

2. Preliminary Visual Examination
Using standardized lighting and magnification tools, our gemologists perform an initial assessment to evaluate color, transparency, surface features, and other visual characteristics that may hint at the gem’s nature.

3. Refractive Index Testing
Using a refractometer, we measure the gem’s refractive index — a key optical property used to differentiate between gem types with similar appearance.

4. Specific Gravity Measurement
We determine the gem’s density (specific gravity) using hydrostatic weighing or heavy liquids, helping to further narrow down potential identities.

5. Microscopic Inclusion Analysis
Under high-powered magnification, we examine the stone’s internal structure to observe inclusions, growth patterns, and features that reveal whether a gem is natural, treated, or synthetic.

6. Advanced Instrument Testing
We employ state-of-the-art gemological instruments such as:

  • Spectroscope: Analyzes light absorption patterns unique to certain gem species.
  • UV Fluorescence: Reveals reactions to ultraviolet light to help identify origin or treatments.
  • FTIR & Raman Spectroscopy: Detects treatments and identifies mineral composition at the molecular level.

7. Identification Report Issuance
Upon completion, we provide a Gemstone Identification Report that includes:

  • Precise gem species and variety
  • Origin status (natural, synthetic, imitation)
  • Treatment detection (if applicable)
  • Optical and physical properties
  • High-resolution photos
  • Certificate number and client details (optional)

8. Expert Consultation (Optional)
For clients needing additional guidance, our gemologists offer consultation to interpret the report, assess value implications, or discuss resale, mounting, or certification options.
